The late American psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Stern, described it in an article in The New York Times as a time of an intense identity transition: “Giving birth to a new identity can be as demanding as giving birth to a baby.” The wellbeing of mothers is a relatively new field of scholarly and clinical inquiry with the mother as the primary focus. The focus has most often been on the mother as she relates to positive or negative outcomes for the baby/child. In short, just as adolescence describes a teenager’s passage into adulthood, matrescence describes a woman’s transition into motherhood and all the psychological and physical change that comes with it. It begins during pregnancy and continues after the baby is born.

Coined by Anthropologist Dana Rafael. Matrescence is subtle, nuanced and generic as both an attribute and attitude of birth-centre care, and seemed pivotal to assisting women on their 'becoming mother' journey. As a new concept, it needs further exploration, both within birth centre and hospital settings. Marcescence is the retention of dead plant organs that normally are shed. Trees transfer water and sap from the roots to the leaves through their vascular cells, but in some trees as autumn begins, the veins carrying the sap slowly close until a layer of cells called the abscission layer completely closes off the vein allowing the tree to rid itself of the leaf.

On this site and in our materials, we currently use the terms “mother”, “motherhood”, and “mother-becoming” to tie their meaning back to the root word of “matrescence”. The process of becoming a mother has been referred to as "matrescence".
